Shared Living

The right support you need for independent living. It provides an option for adults with developmental disabilities to get the support they need while living with a family member or a caregiver. The person resides with one or more family members or caregivers, and they provide twenty percent or more of the person’s care and support services. OSL family members and caregivers support adults with developmental disabilities in a home setting. Some benefits of using the OSL service are that it:

  • nurtures family bonds, long-term relationships, and community connections;
  • provides consistency of care and a safe environment;
  • helps the person experience a genuine community life;
  • develops the routines chosen by the person; and
  • promotes shared decision-making

Service Planning

Eligibility for the OSL (Ohio Shared Living) Service is decided based on a person’s living situation and person-centered needs outlined in the Individual Service Plan (ISP). To qualify for the OR service, a person must be at least 18 years of age, have an Individual Options (IO) Waiver, and live with one or more family members or caregivers approved to be OSL providers.

OSL service may be authorized when one or more adult caregivers who reside with the person provide twenty percent or more of the personal care and support services needed. OSL applies regardless of whether the person receiving the service and the caregiver are related. Other IO Waiver services, such as Respite, Self-Directed Transportation, Interpreter Services, Non-Medical Transportation, Adult Day, Vocational Habilitation, and employment or career services, are still available to people participating in Ohio Shared Living. A person receiving the OSL service may or may not have other roommates with developmental disabilities.

Remote Supported Living

Remote Supported Living allows a trusted DODD Provider in Ohio to use electronic equipment and real-time communication tools to support individuals with developmental disabilities while promoting greater independence at home.

This service enables an off-site direct support professional to monitor and respond to a person’s health, safety, and daily needs through live two-way communication, similar to Skype or FaceTime. With guidance from a reliable DODD Provider in Ohio, individuals can easily communicate their needs while enjoying a safer and more independent lifestyle.

Remote Support uses two-way communication in real-time, just like Skype or FaceTime, so a person can communicate their needs easily. A person can choose supports like sensors that call for help if someone has fallen or cameras that help monitor who is visiting a person’s home.

This service is always combined with Assistive Technology.

When to Apply this Service? - DODD Provider in Ohio

Ohio is a Technology first state, which means Remote Support must be considered as the first option when authorizing services for a person with disabilities before authorizing on-site Homemaker/Personal Care staff.

The person’s service and support administrator, or SSA, will assess them for a need for Remote Support. If there is a need, the SSA will include it in the person’s individual service plan. When discussing if Remote Support is right for someone, the person and their team should follow these steps:

  • Have a conversation to identify why a person uses direct care staff and if their health and safety needs can be met remotely.
  • Hold a team meeting to talk about which needs might be met remotely, for what hours, and how backup support will be provided.
  • If the person chooses Remote Support, he or she will use the free choice of provider process to select an agency provider. That provider will act as backup support to the person. The provider will subcontract with the Remote Support vendor to offer equipment and monitoring staff.
  • If the backup support is unpaid, natural support like family or neighbors, the person, or their guardian will Choose the vendor.
  • The service and support administrator will then work with the team to amend the individual service plan to include detailed procedures about the new Remote Support.
